- The Facts:

  Texas is the largest of the 48 contiguous states, second only to Alaska overall. Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States. It is a major center for the oil and gas industry, petrochemicals, biotechnology, medical, computers and technology, aerospace, and the hospitality industries.

  Houston is one of the largest cities in the United States with a population of 1.95 million*. Between 1960 and 1970, Houston grew from 14th to the 6th most populous city in the country and by 1998 had grown to become the 4th largest city. Houston CCD (County Census District) has a population of 2.66 million*, but counting the outlying suburbs beyond the borders of Harris County, the population is thought to exceed 4 million.

The City of Houston covers 580 square miles. Greater Houston covers approximately 1,900 square miles, and is larger than the state of Rhode Island (1,212 sq.mi.) and is almost as big as Delaware (2,045 sq.mi.) Harris County is 1,729 sq.mi.

Houston is the seat of Harris County which has a population of  3.4 million*.

The North Houston region, an area of about 700 square miles, has seen high levels of residential and commercial growth during the past four decades. Even so, population density is still lower than other Houston suburban areas, with many large tracts of wooded and cleared (farm/ranch) land still available for development.

Including the northern half of Harris County and the southern portion of Montgomery County, the area north of Houston is home to large development cores, such as Kingwood-Atascocita in the northeast, Greenspoint and The Woodlands, in the north, and Cy-Fair and the greater "1960 Area" in the northwest. The 400,000 households in the North Houston region include a total population of about 1 million people.

Intercontinental Airport opened in 1969, and was later named the George Bush Intercontinental Airport for Present George Bush.

International passenger service provided at Bush Intercontinental links at least 27 cities in Europe, Canada, Mexico, and Central and South America. Regularly scheduled airlines fly to 67 US airports, and 63 US cities are served with direct flights.

With the development of new office buildings, and continuing growth in the Intercontinental Airport area, the local economic base has expanded to include more than 100,000 jobs.

Houston's 200 million square feet of office space makes it the 5th.largest office market in the nation.

Houston is home to over 500 foreign-owned companies.

Compaq Computer was formed in 1982 and soon became the largest PC maker in the world. By 2002 they had merged with Hewlett-Packard. The Compaq Campus in Northwest Houston provides jobs for 20,000 local residents, almost as many employees as the City of Houston (22,000.)

About 3.5 million patients visit the Texas Medical Center annually

Harris County has 70 hospitals with 19,000 beds.

Houston Northwest Medical Center began providing hospital service in December of 1973. More than 500 physicians, dentists and podiatrists offer comprehensive services in more than 54 medical specialties.

Cypress Creek Emergency Medical Services Association was established in 1975. CCEMS consistently arrives on the scene in less than 7 minutes providing an exceptional level of emergency care in a 250 square mile area, responding to approximately 1,100 emergency calls per month.

North Harris College opened in 1973 to provide the area with higher education, and has grown into the North Harris Montgomery Community College District with student enrollment of over 30,000 each semester in credit classes and 15,000 in community education. It is the 4th largest community college district in Texas, with five distinct colleges and seven satellite centers.

Greenspoint Mall opened in 1978 followed by Willowbrook Mall in 1981.

Champions Golf Club was established in 1958 by Jackie Burke and Jimmie Demaret, the Raveneaux Country Club began in 1978, and Northgate Country Club opened its doors in 1984.

The quiet Northwest Houston countryside housed 75,000 people in 1970, and 200,000 by 1977. Today, Northwest Harris County has a population of over 400,000 people*.
