Texas is the largest of the 48 contiguous states, and Houston is America's fourth largest city. Many people relocating to Houston choose the northwest area to buy a home. Northwest Houston has some of the finest schools in the state, with Klein ISD, Spring ISD and Cy-Fair ISD serving the area.

A Northwest Houston home
At the start of the 1960s, Houston was well on the way to becoming one of America's super-cities. Newcomers filled positions in the growing petrochemical and aerospace industries. Developers looked to the wooded areas north of the city, where it seemed to be cooler and less humid, to build homes for the growing population. Thanks to the farm-to-market road, FM 1960, golfers could easily reach the Champions Golf Club, established in 1958, and it wasn't long before Champions and other premier subdivisions were built along FM.1960 -- fast becoming known as the 1960 area -- and elsewhere in the great northwest area.

The prospect of an International airport in 1966 brought developers in droves. And, when Shell Oil Company relocated its corporate headquarters to Houston from New York City, 1400 new families moved to Houston -- many to the north of the city.

In the decade, 1960 to 1970, Houston grew from 14th to the 6th most populous city in the country. The quiet countryside housed 75,000 people in 1970, and 200,000 by 1977. This rapid growth called for local services. Houston Northwest Medical Center began providing hospital service in December of 1973; Cypress Creek Emergency Medical Services Association was established in 1975; and the area gained higher education when North Harris County Community College opened in May 1976.

Local shopping improved when Greenspoint Mall opened in 1978 followed by Willowbrook Mall in 1981. When Compaq Computer opened its campus-like headquarters in Northwest Houston, many high-tech jobs became available for an increasingly sophisticated populace. Today, north Harris County is home to over 450,000 people. The area offers some of the best schools in the state, and many residents have chosen to locate their businesses in the neighborhood as well. The wooded beauty of the north Houston region is a major factor in the area's popularity.

As new homes are built, new businesses move to the area, so that FM.1960 is now also a substantial commercial and shopping area. Personal service companies abound. Restaurants and night clubs are numerous. In addition to the large malls, individual stores and smaller shopping centers provide all that local residents require. The quality of life in the northwest Houston region is fostered by numerous cultural, recreational and health facilities and activities. The Centrum, on Cypresswood, is a 900-seat auditorium that hosts cultural performances by the Hoston Symphony and other local, and national, celebrities. The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands, further north, is a major local facility that features top name popular musical groups, orchestras and ballet. Numerous outstanding country clubs and public golf courses underscore the popularity of golf with local residents.

The old farm-to-market road that served to unite the old German farming communities in the mid- to late-19th.century, now serves to unite The 1960 Area as a busy 7-lane highway. Notwithstanding all its recent growth, there is still plenty of open land for development, and the area can be expected to prosper for many years to come.
