In recent years, Underwater movies - both fiction and non-fiction - have really become superb. And we mustn't forget the classics, either. The excitement of the real world is a good match for the imagination of the moviemakers. Sample both here -
~ for Gifts   Secrets of the Ocean Realm : Explore the fascinating and extraordinary behavior of creatures deep within their undersea world. This stunning new series presents never-before-seen behaviors of sharks, whales, dolphins and many other unusual marine animals. Dive into the submarine forests of giant kelp in the Northeastern Pacific. Examine the complex behaviors marine creatures employ to spawn, escape predators and survive. Witness bizarre defense and predation strategies including camouflage and deadly venom, then enter a waterworld of darkness where nocturnal swimmers rise from a black abyss or emerge from undersea caves in the never-ending struggle to capture prey and survive. Includes: "Cathedral in the Sea," "Survival in the Sea," "Venom," "Creatures of Darkness," "The Great Whales," "Sharks," "City in the Sea," "Star Gardens," "Mountain in the Sea," and "Filming Secrets." for Gifts   The Secret of Roan Inish: Following the death of her mother, young Fiona (Jeni Courtney) is sent to live with her grandparents on the Irish coast across from Roan Inish, the island where her family once lived. She's told stories about the selkies--seals that can turn into humans--who have been connected with Fiona's family over the ages. At first she's not sure if the selkies are real or mythological, but she later realizes that they hold the key to reclaiming her family heritage. for Gifts   Jewels of the Caribbean Sea: Tour the depths of the Caribbean where, in waters famed for hidden treasures, another kind of wealth lies in abundance. As wondrously beautiful as they may be, coral reefs are also living factories, vast and nearly timeless. To pass through an undulating wall of thimble jellies and descend a few hundred feet down these fantastically colored cities of the sea is to descend through history. While vibrantly colored Caribbean reef squid participate in a ritualistic visual combat for mating rights, the battles of others aren't as aesthetically pleasing. Only the most wary survive. for Gifts   Caribbean Mystery : Joan Hickson stars as Agatha Christie's super-sleuth Miss Marple in the wonderful, A Caribbean Mystery. Miss Marple has been sent to Barbados by her nephew due to ill-health. But soon Jane finds more adventure and suspense than in her little English village of St Mary Mead. Miss Marple finds that life among the idle-rich, even in a paradise in the West Indies, isn't all it's cracked up to be - in fact, nothing ever seems to happen. Not until old Major Palgrave is found dead at the Golden Palm Hotel. for Gifts   Cradle in the Sea- Spotted Dolphin & Sea Otter: Born into a world of crystal clear water, the spotted dolphin is welcomed by excited relatives. From this moment on, she will never be alone. Instead, she will be connected to her pod through relationships essential to her survival. In time, the curious dolphin learns the ways of her tribe as she hunts, avoids sharks and navigates the vast ocean waters.
- The baby sea otter is born in the translucent green canopy of the towering kelp forest. Too buoyant to dive, the pup relies on his mother to search for food. During this time, he will learn the myriad skills needed to survive, including how to care for his coat -- the densest of any animal on earth -- and how to use his whiskers to detect prey in the sand. for Gifts   Flipper: Elijah Wood plays Sandy, a bleak adolescent from Chicago. Sandy is sent to Coral Key, an island off Australia, to spend a summer with his Uncle Porter (Paul Hogan), a benevolent old fisherman. The sights and pleasures of the island, including a pretty neighbor named Kim (Jessica Wesson), aren't enough to shake off Sandy's gloomy outlook. But when he meets Flipper, his morale improves considerably. A subplot has a crooked charter-boat company dumping toxic waste off the coast giving Flipper a mystery to solve.

Scuba Bookshelves     Books always make good gifts. Here are a selection of scuba diving books, and diving magazines, too — an annual subscription would make an excellent gift.
