Set an example for others to follow.
A paper cup, a plastic bag, tossed overboard does not disappear. For a scuba diver, this is like throwing trash all over your own backyard. You see the results of such neglect. Even small items like a cigarette butt or tiny pieces of food can disturb the balance, adding poisons and unhealthy elements to this wonderland we call a dive site.
Be a role model for others. Not only on the dive or in the boat, but at home, on the highway, in parks and on the city streets. Encourage others to follow your lead. And, if it means picking up after someone else - well, so be it!

Report unusual changes or destruction at your dive sites.
As divers, we are in a unique position to monitor the health of local waterways, lakes and coastal areas. If you see something unusual happening, draw it to the attention of local authorities.
A sudden fish kill, or odd coloration of the water, a rash of injuries to marine life, or strange substances or objects in the water, can signify or warn of danger to the environment. Report such events to the responsible environmental agency in your area.
It might take some searching to discover who is responsible. If there is no entry in the local telephone book for Environmental Protection, check with the librarian at your nearest main library, or university or college campus.

There is so much a diver can do to protect a marine environment - taking care how we dive, watching the placement of fins and hands so as to not damage the reef or disturb habitat, maintaining diving proficiency with bouyancy control, resisting the temptation to take souvenirs, reporting unusual environmental changes and getting involved with local clean-up efforts and legislative issues.
    You can make a difference.
