How can you tell if your dive buddy is really Bill Gates? — After a dive, his hair look really funny– like a bowl cut with bits sticking out everywhere.
No, wait...that's before a dive!

- Marginal Martin 1999.

Most dive resorts have a variety of dives suitable for scuba divers of all experience levels. A few, however, call for more skill and special training.
Selecting the right dive destination is paramount in having the best possible vacation.

What Do You Want?

Determine your vacation goals. Do you want to do some sight-seeing as well as diving, or do you want as much bottom time as possible? Do you want to take a Dive Specialty course, or otherwise improve your training?
Live-Aboards have become quite popular, and are great if all you want to do is dive. Obviously, there is very little else to do on board. As a consequence, if you are traveling with a non-diving companion, a live-aboard is probably not a sensible choice.

Underwater Photography

General visibility is particluarly important if you or your dive buddy want to take photographs of the marine environment. Pay particular attention to the weather - many locations have a dry season and a rainy season, and rain can reduce visibility considerably. Here are some more photography tips.

~

Agency Affiliation

Some tourist bureaux and certainly diver training organizations like Padi and Naui, require affiliated dive operators to maintain specific quality standards. This doesn't mean non-affiliated operations are of a low standard, but it does mean you need to take more care with non-affiliated operators.
By far the most important reason for choosing a dive operator based on their affiliation is, if you want to complete or continue your diver training. Make sure you select one that can do what you want.

~

What's Included?

Make sure you know what is included and what is excluded from the dive package.
What about Tank rentals? Beach dives? Air fills? How much of your own equipment will you need to take, and what is available for rent? Be careful when comparing prices, because one resort may include these things and seem more expensive than another which does not include them.
You won't be diving all the time, so what else is there to do at the resort?
