Finding a Great Scuba Diving Certification Instructor

Now that you are ready to begin your exciting adventure in Scuba Diving, it’s time for you to find the right dive center and instructor to help you on your way.

There are two ways to go about finding a local dive center that is right for you. If you have researched which dive training organization you would like to be certified through, you can simply go to their website and search for endorsed dive centers in your area. By taking this route, you can feel fairly comfortable in knowing that the dive center and instructors must meet the standards of the dive training organization you have chosen. Your other option is to find the local dive centers by opening your phone book or searching on the Internet.

Once you have identified dive centers that interest you, you will have to make some calls or visits to decide which one is right for you. There are several things you will want to consider when choosing a suitable dive shop. Your first step will be to find out if they are licensed and insured, this is very important if you found them through the Yellow Pages or Internet. Diving certification includes a variety of costs such as equipment rental, books, and dive logs. Prices will differ for each dive shop, so you will want to do some comparison-shopping. You will also want to find out class sizes since you will probably want a small diver to instructor ratio. Some dive centers offer private classes, which is a fantastic option for people with tight schedules or those who need a little more attention, however these will cost more.

If you visit the dive centers, be sure to pay attention to the cleanliness of the center. Your first dive experience will not be pleasant if you have to enter a foggy and grimy pool in rental gear that hasn’t been washed since 1995.

After you’ve looked into the various dive centers in your area and found one that suits you, you will want to find out more about the instructor that will be teaching your class. You should be able to get a good idea about the dive instructor by speaking with them on the phone, or meeting with them in person. Other than making sure that the dive instructor is also well certified and insured, there are several characteristics that you may want to look for in someone who is about to teach you how to dive.

When speaking with the dive instructors, find out how many dives they have under their belt. The amount of dives an instructor has done is a good indication of their experience and how well they will be prepared to deal with any questions or issues that may arise. You will also want to ask them about their teaching styles to make sure that it fits with your learning style.

Some other traits you may want to look for in a dive instructor:

  • Caring
  • Patience
  • Good communicators
  • Willingness to assist those who need a little more help
  • Physical fitness
  • Enthusiasm

Finding a quality dive center and instructor is going to enhance your introduction to diving and is worth taking the time to find.
